I never saw the play but it must have been marvelous. Luckily I did get to see the movie, and it had me breathless. The Cleveland audience may have loved the 4 Seasons and they kvell that the boys are now part of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, but they cannot know the 1950s east coast as I do.
When the strains of SUNDAY KIND OF LOVE first played, it was all I could do not to weep. The sweetness of the story, the talent of the actors, the music and the nostalgia are overwhelming.
John Lloyd Young gives a stirring performance as Frankie Valli, the young singer determined to be "as big as Sinatra". and who may have become as big, at least to our 1950s and 1960s generation.
And every other actor seems to have been perfectly chosen to act out the rise of the Four Seasons.
Mike Doyle plays Bob Crewe, a gay record producer who intruduces the boys to a bohemian world and records their first records. Crewe, in an offhanded remark which completely is lost on the 4 boys, says that they have taken the name of their group from Vivaldi. The Four Seasons,Le quattro stagioni, of course is a set of four violin concertos by Antonio Vivaldi, Composed in 1725.
Joseph Russo turns in a likeable performance as a young Joe Pesci.
Along their route to fame and success, the Four Seasons had to face a series of challenges; gambling debts, Mafia threats, love relationships gone awry, and family disasters.
The movie manages to include the blockbusters that we have come to love. Among their many hits, the film features SHERRY, WALK LIKE A MAN, BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY, WHO LOVES YOU, BABY, RAG DOLL, and WORKING MY WAY BACK TO YOU.
Rather than detailing the many outstanding adventures in the lives of Frankie Valli and the seasons, I urge you to see the movie for yourselves. After 2 hours and a
And as if all the wonder of the story if this talented group weren't enough, the last scene when the ensemble reprises the songs behind the closing credits, you just have to sing along!
Joe Pesci, where ever you are, I ihope you are proud!
