THE PINK GLOVE DANCE

Pink Glove Dance Culture Buzz Video put together by the staff of Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Oregon to help promote breast cancer awareness.

The Pink Glove Dance is a viral public health awareness campaign and video phenomenon created and hosted by Medline Industries to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer

• Purpose: To promote breast cancer awareness, honor survivors, remember those lost to the disease, and support underserved populations (with Medline donating a portion of pink glove sales toward free mammograms).

• Participants: Doctors, nurses, administrators, food service staff, security personnel, construction workers, and breast cancer survivors dancing through hospital corridors, lobbies, and helipads.

Oregonian, Emily Somers created and directed this fantastic breast cancer awareness fundraiser video called the Pink Glove Dance. Medline features these pink gloves so that health care providers can show their support and Medline itself donates portions of each box sold to breast cancer awareness. The video is an additional fundraiser as Medline has pledged a donation to the hospital if the video hits a million views mark.

No, they’re not professional dancers, and they haven’t recently updated their Facebook status from the altar or paraded down the aisle to Chris Brown, but these 200-plus doctors, nurses and Providence St. Vincent Center hospital staffers are viral video stars all the same. Their purpose for the platform, however, is to save lives.

The clever employees created their oh-so-cute video, “Pink Glove Dance,” to the tune of Jay Sean’s hit song, “Down,” in order to raise money and awareness to fight breast cancer.

The video, which features the staffers wearing special pink gloves that can be purchased for the cause, has gone viral on YouTube, amassing nearly 2.8 million views.

Now the sprightly bunch has attracted the attention of media outlets like FOX News. On December 8, 2009, a group of dancers will appear on the show Fox and Friends, most likely flaunting their pink gloves and dancing moves. Until then, check out the video here.

• Expansion (2010–2011): Medline expanded the campaign into a sequel featuring thousands of health care workers and survivors across North America, followed by a national video competition that invited hospitals and health organizations to produce their own synchronized routines.

• Impact: Over 150,000 healthcare workers, patients, and community members have participated in Pink Glove Dance videos over the years, helping clinicians spark difficult conversations about breast cancer prevention and early detection.
