TANUR SHEL AKHNAI

It's one of the key and cornerstone texts that we learn in seminary. In rabbinical school, it is seen as heralding the path of the of the Conservative movement. It is also taught at the beginning of 9th grade to students as a way of introducing them to questions of Hellenic authority.
It's a very popular and incredible story.

This is called, they say, the oven of AKHNAI. And what is the relevance of AKHNAI? Well, that word means snake. So it's possible that the guy who owned the oven is called AKHNAI, and so it's called TANUR SHEL AKHNAI, the oven of AKHNAI, because it's his oven. But the rabbis are attentive to the meaning of words and they say that it's when we call it the oven of AKHNAI, that means it's the oven of snakes. And why is it the oven of snakes? Because Rabi Yehudah says the rabbis are about to surround this oven like a snake which forms a coil at rest. And when they surround this oven like snakes, they are declaring it impure.
That now we see it is starting to feel that it's a story about more than the KASHRUT of an oven.
